Oil and gas sector sees 1,446 M&As worth $202bn during Q1-Q3

A total of 1,446 mergers and acquisitions (M&A) deals worth $202.1 billion were announced in the oil and gas sector from Q1 to Q3, 2022. This is according to GlobalData’s report, ‘Global and Oil & Gas M&A Report Financial Adviser League Tables Q1-Q3 2022’.

JP Morgan and RBC Capital Markets were the top (M&A) financial advisers in oil and gas sector for Q1-Q3 2022 by value and volume, said the latest Financial Advisers League Table by GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

An analysis of GlobalData’s Financial Deals Database reveals that JP Morgan achieved the leading position by value by advising on $26 billion worth of deals. Meanwhile, RBC Capital Markets led by volume by advising on a total of 22 deals.

RBC Capital Markets

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “RBC Capital Markets was the only firm that managed to advise on more than 20 deals during Q1-Q3 2022. It was also a strong contender for the top spot by value and missed it by a whisker.

“Both RBC Capital Markets and JP Morgan advised on six billion-dollar deals each. However, JP Morgan managed to lead by value, while RBC Capital Markets fell short of just $193 million from occupying the top position and settled at the second position by this metric.”

Citi occupied the third position by value, by advising on $19.1 billion worth of deals, followed by Goldman Sachs, with $17.5 billion, and Jefferies, with $15.7 billion.

Meanwhile, Jefferies occupied the second position in terms of volume with 18 deals, followed by JP Morgan, with 14 deals, Evercore, with 14 deals, and Citi, with 13 deals.

Legal Advisers

Kirkland & Ellis and Vinson & Elkins were the top M&A legal advisers in oil and gas sector for Q1-Q3 2022 by value and volume, respectively, according to the latest Legal Advisers League Table by GlobalData.

An analysis of GlobalData’s Financial Deals Database reveals that Kirkland & Ellis achieved the leading position by value by advising on $35.5 billion worth of deals. Meanwhile, Vinson & Elkins led by volume by advising on a total of 43 deals.

Bose comments: “The competition for the top position by volume was tight as Vinson & Elkins and Kirkland & Ellis were the only advisers with more than 40 deals each during Q1-Q3 2022. While Vinson & Elkins led by volume, Kirkland & Ellis was just short of only one deal to secure the top spot.

Kirkland & Ellis

“Kirkland & Ellis, which led by value, occupied the second position by volume with 42 deals. Vinson & Elkins, apart from leading by volume, also managed to occupy the second position by value by advising deals worth $33.3 billion.”

Latham & Watkins occupied the third position by value, by advising on $30.8 billion worth of deals, followed by Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, with $17 billion, and Baker Botts, with $14.9 billion

Meanwhile, Latham & Watkins occupied the third position in terms of volume with 28 deals, followed by Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, with 18 deals, and Baker Botts, with 16 deals.
